Ok, here is a quick ref to Carladiel my Hobbit/LotR OC. I actually came up with her when I was still a kid and wrote Hobbit fan fics. She used to basically look like what 9year old me thought 16-17 year old me would look like
After a while though, I started to change things around and make her into an actual character. (the only things that resemble me in her are her eyes and hair color XD) Impossibly long description warning!
Since there isn't a whole lot of info about a lot of women in Tolkien's works, it was rather easy for me to weave my character into the story. Parents and backstory:
Carladiel was a daughter of Brand (king of Dale) and a half elf-Helin (violet
in elvish) (in my story he married her after Bard II's mum died (and I had her die in childbirth--yes I was a morbid child
). C also had two older sisters.
-->More info about Helin's family:
her mum is nameless for now. She was an elf and married a mortal man (a lord from Rohan)That was basically considered a misalliance by her family and she was disowned and her father cursed her and her offspring (that will play a role later-on). She had one daughter: Helin. After the death of her husband no one knew what happened to her.
--> info about Carladiel's name:
She was supposed to be named Caerȃddiêl (10 paths under a star
in Sindarin because of the way her eyes looked like (more info later on)) but Brand didn’t want to have any of that weird sounding elvishness so it got shortened to Caradiel and somehow turned to Carladiel to make it sound softer…Helin wasn’t pleased X’D
she was given it as a gift from the dwarves when she was born. The stone glows red whenever there is/or is going to be bloodshed (like during battles or hunting)
Now, since Dale is located between Mirkwood and the Lonely Mountain and since it's mentioned somewhere that Brand had a good relationship with the dwarves I had Dale interact with both of the places; C's mum being a half elf made it easier to maintain an alliance w/the Mirkwood elves.
So Helin would send her daughters to Mirkwood and Rivendell to learn how to be refined young ladies, but Carladiel was sort of a lost cause. Instead of learning to play the harp and sing she would rather sneak in to her father’s meetings and listen to the dwarves tell stories of old battles (they’d never talk to her about the Battle of 5 Armies though (important later)). Also, much to her mum’s annoyance, she really had an affinity to the dwarves and would sneak out to talk and hunt with them. Basically the only elf she tolerated was Legolas and that’s mainly because of his archery skills. He’d call her “mellon vrûn” (old friend)—and she basically thought it was some quirk of his XD
When she went to Rivendell when she was 12-13 she would basically lock herself in and would read ancient books and skip her lessons. XD (also important later on). In the meantime one of C’s older sisters was married off to someone in Gondor.
About a year before Elrond’s council, Brand sent his wife, C and C’s sister to Rivendell to keep them safe. On the way there they were attacked by orcs and C’s mum and sister were killed.
---ok this next part is sort of stupid, but remember that this was made up by younger me---
Carladiel becomes a tad obsessed w/what happened and starts looking through all those ancient books she once found in Rivendell. Turns out one of them has spells. She tries to make a spell to go back in time and save her mum and sister, but messes up horrendously (mostly because she has no idea what she’s doing
) and gets thrown back to Rivendell pre-Hobbit time. There she meets Thorin&Co. Of course they don’t believe her, but since she knew some of them (like Dwalin, Bombur, etc) she basically knew exactly what to say/do to convince them. XD She became rather close to everyone, especially Fili and Kili (due to their mischievous-prank-loving nature). She also totally, fangirls over Thorin, being all “Would you like some wine master Thorin—would you like the rabbit I hunted,” etc
She fights along them in the Battle of the 5 Armies (here I made an alternate ending where everyone survived, but changed it back to the original story-line later on *cries in a corner*) and takes Thorin, Fili, and Kili’s death really badly. After everything is over she returns to Rivendell, where after a few years she finds out about her g-ma’s curse…which makes her immortal (you know eternal suffering and all). She basically hangs out at Rivendell and travels around Middle Earth, unable to really find a place for herself. During her travels she meets Legolas and becomes friends with him. She slowly starts embracing her elven side and goes back to Rivendell, leaving only when her “younger self” comes there. When LotR time comes again she fights in the Battle of Dale and then after the War of the Ring is over joins Legolas and Gimli in their journeys.Physical info
She was about 5'4-5'5" ish when she met Thorin&CO (when she was about 15-16ish)
-eyes-blue-grey with 10 white “stars” around the rim
-traits-stubborn, fun-loving, a tom-boy, overly loyal–later more quiet and serious, but has her “old-self outbursts” XD
-skills-great at horseback riding (yay Rohan genes XD), and archery, not so good at swordfighting, but keeps a shortsword/really long dagger, speaks Sindarin, can talk to thrushes (like everyone in her family), apparently is god awful at spells XD
-clothing choices-mostly earthy toned hunting clothes (sort of like Legolas' but a tad girlier XD) Sometimes seen wearing a dress XD
